Suranjan Gupta has over 36 years of extensive experience in international trade, economic diplomacy, public policy, and institutional leadership.
Mr. Gupta superannuated as Executive Director of the Engineering Export Promotion Council (EEPC) India in June 2024. EEPC India, functioning under the Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Government of India, is the premier export promotion body for the engineering sector. In this capacity, he represented Indian engineering exporters on a wide spectrum of trade and investment policy matters. His responsibilities included engaging with the Department of Commerce on trade policy formulation, Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations, WTO issues, tariff and non-tariff barriers, trade remedies, and sector-specific industry concerns. He actively interacted with diplomatic missions and led trade promotion initiatives through global exhibitions and trade fairs.
Before joining EEPC India in 2006 as Joint Director (Policy), Mr. Gupta served as Economic Specialist at the American Consulate in Kolkata, where he reported on U.S.–India economic and commercial relations, particularly concerning Eastern and Northeastern India.
Earlier, he served as Adviser in the Trade & Economic Section at the Delegation of the European Commission in India (2001–2006). In this role, he handled EU trade policy matters, WTO negotiations, GSP and preferential trade arrangements, market access issues, foreign direct investment, and monetary developments related to the Euro.
Mr. Gupta began his professional journey with Confederation of Engineering Industry (now CII) and then to the Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC), Kolkata, where he rose from Assistant Secretary to Joint Secretary. He led the Economic Research Department, producing influential policy papers and studies on WTO impacts, infrastructure development, fiscal incentives, and urban services. He also oversaw trade facilitation services, business information systems, and international networking initiatives.
An alumnus of St. Xavier’s College, Kolkata (B.Sc. Economics Honors) and Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi (MA Economics), Mr. Gupta specialized in international trade, and monetary economics. He has co-edited academic volumes and authored numerous articles in leading national publications including The Statesman, The Telegraph, Hindustan Times, and Hindu Business Line.
